Marketing and Media Research Institute - Skopje here
are with the key findings
USAGE OF INTERNET
31% of the total population does have a PC
in their household, and 69% don't. Understandable differences from
the average figures were noted among participants with university
degree - 62%, urban population - 37%, employed - 40% and pupils/students
- 56%. The percentage of participants that have a PC in the category
of people with primary education is 18%, people from the rural regions
- 20%, housewives and retired people - 12%, and unemployed - 23%.
39% of the people that own a PC have an access
to the internet, but the number of people that cannot access it
is bigger - 61%.
24% of the total population uses the Internet.
Figures higher than the average were noted in the categories: men
- 28%, age group 14 - 29 - 48%, participants with university degree
- 43%, pupils and students - 63%, employed - 28% and interviewed
participants from the urban population - 27%. Figures lower than
the average were presented in the categories: female population
- 19%, age group 40-49 - 15%, age group 50-59 - 11%, older than
60 - only 3%, participants with primary education - 19%, housewives
and retired people - 5%, unemployed - 16% and participants from
the rural regions in Macedonia --17%.
37% of the interviewed participants that
use internet (24% of the total population), use it on a daily base,
39% use the internet at least once per week, 9% at least once per
month, and 15% of the interviewed participants use the internet
less then once per month. 58% of the interviewed participants with
university degree use the Internet almost everyday.
43% of the Internet users access it mostly
from their homes. The age group 50-59 - 80% presented serious deviation
from this average number. 35% access the Internet from internet
- caf?. This percentage is significantly smaller among the participants
with a university degree - only 14%. Internet is accessed from the
office by 10%, from school - 8%, from friend's home - 4%.
Internet users access the net mostly from
the internet - caf?s - 58%, 46% from their homes, 29% use their
friend's access, 23% from school/college and 20% from the office.
31% of the internet users (24% of the total
population) use it to brows the web, 27% use it professionally,
18% as aid in their school/college assignments and 16% to download
movies, music, games etc.
Internet users (24% of the total population)
use the access for movies, music, games etc in 55%, browsing - 52%,
work - 34%, school/college - 32%.
35% of the population that stated to access
the internet from their homes (11% of the total population) use
ADSL internet connection, 22% use cable internet, 21% use Dial -
up connection (Macedonia Telecom), 16% use wireless internet, and
only 2% use the Dial - up prepaid connection. The number of users
of ADSL connection among the Albanian population is significantly
higher than the average - 63%, while the respective percentage among
the Macedonian population is 22%. Regarding the use of cable internet
access, 31% of the Macedonian population and only 6% of the Albanian
population stated they use this method of access.
Highest percent of the interviewed participants
that have access to the internet at home use it less than 5 hours
per week - 30%. 28% of them use the Internet 5-15 hours, and round
19% of the participants use the Internet more than 35 hours. Out
of these, 35% are very satisfied with the services provided by the
internet operator, 42% are partially satisfied, 13% are partially
unsatisfied and 8% are completely unsatisfied. Regarding the prices
of the Internet services, 18% of the participants said they are
very satisfied, 49% are partially satisfied, 12% are partially unsatisfied
and 18% are completely unsatisfied.
The presence of more providers of Internet
services was supported by 78% of the Internet users, while the same
proposal was opposed by 17%. In the category of people who wouldn't
like to have more internet providers and have an internet access
at home (2% of the total population), 33% said that they are completely
satisfied with the current offer of services, 11% said they are
satisfied with the price, and 12% stated other reasons. In the category
of people who prefer more internet providers and have internet access
at home (9% of the total population), 63% said that they hope it
would lead to reduction of the prices of the internet services,
37% believe that it would improve the quality of the services of
the internet providers, 12% are convinced in the need for competition
and 4% stated other reasons.
USAGE OF MOBILE TELEPHONY
28% of the overall population in Macedonia
are not using a mobile telephone, 56% use the services of T - Mobile,
and 21% of Cosmofon. The young population use the mobile phones
in a larger extent, both T - Mobile and Cosmofon, than the population
older than 50. 66% of the total population have their own mobile
phone, 34% do not.
84% of the users of mobile telephony (73%
of the total population) are pre-paid users, while 17% are post-paid
users. Most of the users of mobile telephony, 57% are partially
satisfied with the services provided by the mobile operator. Up
to 31% are completely satisfied, partially satisfied - 7% and completely
unsatisfied - 5%. Numbers different from the average were presented
by participants from the urban areas, whereby the percentage of
unsatisfied people is smaller (5% partially unsatisfied and 2% completely
unsatisfied), and participants from the rural areas whereby the
number of unsatisfied people is bigger (partially unsatisfied -
10% and completely unsatisfied - 8%).
Regarding the price, the opinions of the
users of mobile telephony are distributed as follows: completely
satisfied - 13%, partially satisfied - 48%, partially unsatisfied
- 20% and completely unsatisfied - 17%. The gender distribution
of the category of completely unsatisfied is male - 20%; female
- 13%. Completely satisfied in an extent larger than the average
are participants of Albanian nationality - 20%. In Skopje, larger
figures than the average were presented by the group of participants
who are completely satisfied with the prices of the services, while
the participants from the regions East and Center presented figures
different from the average in the category completely unsatisfied
- 24%.
66% of the users of mobile telephony paid
the bills themselves. In 30% of the cases, the bills are paid by
other member of the family, and only 1% of the mobile telephone
bills is covered by the company.
83% of the users of mobile phones make a
call from mobile to mobile always when they need to, 16% make such
a call only when they have to, and 1% never make a call. 31% of
the users of mobile telephones make a call from mobile to fixed
telephone always when they need to, 51% only when they have to,
and even 18% never make such calls.
86% of the users of mobile telephones would
like to have their choice among more mobile telephony operators.
This opinion was opposed by 14%. From the people that opposed it
(10% of the total population), 35% said there's no need for new
mobile operator, 25% said that they are satisfied with the services
of the actual operator, and 5% are simply happy with the price.
70% of the people who approved the introduction of new mobile operators
(62% of the total population) believe that it would reduce the prices
of the services, 21% believe that the services would get improved,
18% feel that bigger competition would bring better choices of mobile
operators, 2% hope for better choice of chipper mobile phones, and
1% think that it would lead to cancellation of the subscription.
82% of the users have never changed their mobile operator, 11% changed
T - Mobile (Mobimak), and 7% changed Cosmofon. 48% of users who
changed the operator (13% of the total population) did it for better
price, 43% for better services, 4% changed the operator so that
they could use the services of the same together with a friend/family,
4% changed the operator when they bought a new mobile telephone,
and 2% of the participants changed the mobile operator because their
company transferred from one to another.
79% of the users of mobile telephony do not
intent to change their current mobile operator, while 18% of the
participants expressed their readiness to do so. 50% of the participants
that would not change the operator (58% of the total population),
said that they don't want to change the number on which they can
be reached, 35% are happy with the services, 19% are happy with
the prices, 2% said that there isn't a third operator which would
offer better services, and only 1% said that they wouldn't change
their mobile operator because of their friends and family. 79% of
the participants who expressed readiness to change the mobile operator
(14% of the total population) said that they would do it because
of the high price of services, 20% because of the bad quality of
services and 4% stated other reasons.
Information and communication technology
continues to grow in Macedonia and its application has progressed
substantially. Today, the new technologies allow us to have more
control over our engagements, to think analytically and critically,
and to work collaboratively. The most active entity in this regard
is MASIT, which represents the core of the IT environment and its
activities in Macedonia.
